Amazing students designing mobile technology to support eduction i emergency contexts

Since January, twelve brilliant bachelor students have been working on two projects that address how to improve the possibilities of providing eduction in emergencies. Their case has been forced migration and more specifically the challenges caused by the refugee situation in Jordan. The project started based on the experiences of my work with Jamiya in delivering a programming course in a refugee context.

The students has been working in two teams focusing on different aspects of technology support for eduction in a refugee situation. The teams have based their work on Design Thinking and employed Human-Centered Design Methodology in order to ground their designs on the stories and perspectives of people that live as refugees in Amman and in Zaatari. In this work Jesuit Refugee Services in Amman, Jamiya.org and other domain experts have provided valuable input to the teams. Data collection for the inspiration- and evaluation phases has been achieved by interview sessions with individuals in the Swedish asylum system, remote collaboration with individuals in Jordan as well as during field visits in Jordan.

Today the two teams made their final presentations and proved that they are skilled designers and developers able to approach, explore, design and implement solutions that has the potential to make a difference.RemoteClassroomTeamPhotoWide

Each team consists of fantastic individuals with a background in the industrial design programs and computer science. This mix enabled the teams to not only explore innovative design ideas but also to construct clever mechanisms and materialize working solutions.

The results from the two design studies will be used as input and starting points for follow up interventions and in future development work on a mobile platform for eduction in emergencies.

Dags att organisera ett CrisisCamp

Mot bakgrund av de utmaningar som Svensk krishantering står inför på lokal, regional och nationell-nivå så är det dags att organisera ett CrisisCamp.

Syftet med ett CrisisCamp är att genom extremt fokuserat arbete, tillsammans i större team med olika kompetenser, dra nytta av informationsteknologi för att skapa bättre förutsättningar till effektiv hantering av krissituationer eller större händelser.

Ett CrisisCamp är öppet för alla som vill vara med och bidra med sina erfarenheter och kompetens.


Planen är att köra ett 24 timmars CrisisCamp under senare delen av våren 2011 på Lindholmen i Göteborg. Vi söker nu engagerade deltagare från privata sektorn, kommuner, räddningstjänst, ambulanssjukvård, polis, länsstyrelse, smittskydd, sektorsmyndigheter och nationella myndigheter.

Vid detta CrisisCamp kommer deltagarna att formera olika grupper som tar fram förslag och prototyper på nya tjänster som förbättrar förmåga till samverkan och samarbete vid större händelser och kriser.

Social media: bra vid krishantering eller en kris att hantera?

Igår besökte jag Skövde och träffade informatörer från olika kommuner kring i närområdet. Ämnet var Social Media med koppling mot krishantering men också på en mer översiktlig nivå. Det är helt klart att flera kommuner nu gör små steg för att möta de nya möjligheter som Social Media kan ge. Men de är samtidigt sökande kring hur de som myndighet kan agera via social media. Förmiddagen med informatörerna var mycket lyckad, speciellt nöjd med mötet var den avslutande workshopen där informatörerna delades in i grupper där de fick diskutera möjliga sätt att använda social media i förhållande till tre olika scenarier som presenterades för dem. Den avslutande presentationerna som grupperna gjorde gav värdefulla insikter kring möjligheter och utmaningar kring social media.

Workshop on future incident response support software

On Wednesday last week, Crisis Response Lab together with MSB organized a design workshop on future software systems for incident response. The workshop was held at Karlstad Fire and Rescue Services. The workshop resulted in a range of insights and ideas for future development.
The workshop participants, (and the ones that did all the hard work) consisted of eight people from small and medium sized fire and rescue services. As a workshop leader, I am very happy to have worked with such a good group that in an open-minded way addressed all the different tasks that we assigned to them. The massive material will be of great importance for a wide range of possible software solutions addressing the needs experienced during emergency response work. The workshop was conducted by Jonas, Anna, Fredrik from the Crisis Response Lab together with Stefan and Jenny from MSB.

Design Camp with Software Engineering Students

On the 8th of October, the Crisis Response Lab held a Crisis Response Design Camp @ the University of Gothenburg and Chalmers University. The Design Camp was done as part of the Industrial Challenge Course at the Software Engineering and Management masters program. Five groups with software engineering students are in this course working with the topic of designing innovative applications and services for crisis response from a citizens perspective. The design groups conducted field work and interviewed people in the city center in order to get stories and experiences of crisis situations. These stories and experiences were then used as input to the formulation of problem statements for their projects.
