Generative AI has immense potential to revolutionize Swedish sports, and we’re just beginning to scratch the surface. Imagine post-game reports not as static summaries, but as rich, engaging narratives that bring the energy, emotions, and insights of the game straight to fans, players, and coaches. This is precisely the exciting direction of research at the Swedish Center for Digital Innovation in the Department of Applied IT at the University of Gothenburg, in collaboration with the women’s floorball team at Onsala Innebandy this fall.
The goal? To explore how generative AI can enhance team-level reporting and analysis. With AI acting as a “storyteller,” post-game reporting becomes an immersive experience, adding new layers of insight and engagement.
Here’s an example of how this works in practice. The post-game report we created draws on AI tools and methods that allow for an advanced, nuanced account of each game. Using Whisper-transcribed interviews from the team, the report is crafted through “expansive prompting” in ChatGPT-4, which means feeding the model detailed prompts to elicit contextually rich responses. The initial output then undergoes automated translation, contextual tagging, and further refinement in Google NotebookLM Audio Overviews. Finally, we perform a bit of post-production editing with Descript to polish the narrative.
While everything isn’t perfect, this is just the beginning of a promising development. Generative AI is not only a tool but a partner in sports storytelling, capturing the passion and complexity of every match, every play, and every individual moment on the field. And as the technology continues to evolve, so too will the depth and quality of these reports, turning post-game analysis into a dynamic, indispensable part of the sports experience.
Stay tuned – we’re only at the start of an exciting journey that will reshape how we experience and analyze sports at every level.
