On the blog “Public Eye”, Peter Quintas informs about the City of Chicagos efforts in exploring the use of information technology, video surveillance and satellite images, in multi-actor command centre settings.
My comments: Being not as critical as Peter to such technolgies in general, I still have some doubt about such initiatives where the work setting for such systems are “hyper-stationary settings” such as command centres. A more viable and interesting approach should instead be to explore how video surveillance and satellite images could be use in the field as part of the operative work for mobile rescue teams. The people on-site performing the physical work are perhaps better equiped to re-work plans and improvise as dynamic situations unfold.
